LEICESTER, UNITED KINGDOM — The Campaign Against Sex Robots is spouting off on the dangers of using sex robots for pleasure.

The campaign is spearheaded by Kathleen Richardson, an ethicist at De Montfort University in Leicester, and her fellow campaigner Eric Brilling, an associate senior lecturer in informatics at the University of Skovde in Sweden. They say the use of humanoid sex robots will be detrimental to the treatment of women and children. They are also concerned about how sex robots might affect human relationships. They have not mentioned how they feel about other sex toys.

There are already a slew of sex robots and lifelike dolls on the market as well as sci-fi sex robots featured in popular culture including the 2007 film Lars and the Real Girl, the 2001 film A.I. and more recently the AMC series Humans and the 2015 Alex Garland film Ex Machina.

The Campaign Against Sex Robots’ manifesto on its website states: “We are not proposing to extend rights to robots. We do not see robots as conscious entities. We propose instead that robots are a product of human consciousness and creativity and human power relationships are reflected in the production, design and proposed uses of these robots. As a result, we oppose any efforts to develop robots that will contribute to gender inequalities in society.”

  1. They haven’t said how they feel about other sex toys. You mean the ones that are 99% made for women. That’s convenient.
